Moldovan president meets with mayors to discuss local well-being
Moldovan President Maia Sandu met with mayors from the Falesti district on January 20 to discuss how to improve local well-being. Sandu said that the European future of Moldova is the only way to achieve this goal.
"We see this fact through the concrete things that have happened in recent years - only through the "European Village" Program, over 57 million lei have come here. In the villages of Falesti, 24 projects have already been completed or are underway under this program - things that people have been waiting for for decades - street lighting, water supply system, children's playgrounds, or the renovation of schools and kindergartens. I encouraged local elected officials to be proactive, to take advantage of funding opportunities for the good of the people, and to fulfil their role in transforming Moldova into a European state," Sandu said.
At the same time, she assured that the central authorities will continue to act to increase the autonomy and independence of local administrations and to bring financial resources into the country to accelerate the development of Moldova.
On December 9, last year, a Mayors' Forum was organised for the first time in Chisinau under the auspices of the President of Moldova. Representatives from over 700 localities from all over the country participated. At that time, President Maia Sandu asked the Government to "significantly increase the salaries, first of all, of mayors, vice mayors, depending on public dignity, and secretaries of local councils."
Shortly thereafter, Parliament voted in the second reading a draft amendment to the Law on the unitary salary system in the public sector, introducing an amendment that provides that mayors, vice mayors, and secretaries of the local council will receive a bonus of 50% of the basic salary.
