UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to *"redouble its efforts to avoid an escalation of the conflict"* and called for *"maximum restraint"* from all sides.

*"Violence will not solve the conflict, only a negotiated solution that leads to a two-state solution can bring peace,"* Guterres said in a statement.

An emergency meeting of the Israeli cabinet will also be held on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said.

The violence began on Saturday when Hamas launched a surprise military offensive against Israel, firing thousands of rockets and infiltrating militants into the country. Israel responded with airstrikes on Gaza, killing at least 160 people, according to Al Jazeera.
