The incident resulted in a large fire, producing a massive cloud of smoke visible from afar. According to Russian sources, the attack was carried out using a cruise missile, possibly a Storm Shadow or Neptune, though this information has not been officially confirmed.

Traffic on the Kerch Bridge, which connects Russia to the Russian-occupied Crimea region of Ukraine, was temporarily halted, with emergency teams working on-site to contain the fire, according to the [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/russian/live/cerv3417007t?page=2&post=asset%3A3eb1483c-0cff-41fd-b832-6ed1326c6577&post=asset%3A3eb1483c-0cff-41fd-b832-6ed1326c6577#asset:3eb1483c-0cff-41fd-b832-6ed1326c6577).

Local Telegram channels shared photos and videos showing a large plume of smoke rising above the *"Caucasus"* port.

The rail ferry at Kavkaz port, targeted by Ukraine, was reportedly carrying 30 fuel tanks. *"Emergency and special services are on-site. The extent of the fire and details about casualties are being assessed,"* local authorities reported.

Ukraine has not commented on the reports of this attack.

In July, Ukrainian forces carried out several strikes on the *"Caucasus"* port, resulting in damage to the rail ferry *"Slavyanin."* British military intelligence reported that *"Slavyanin"* remained the only ferry on this route and was restored to service after the previous two were damaged by Ukrainian strikes on May 29.
