# Eliud Kipchoge fails to win 12th marathon, finishes ninth

> Paris Olympic champion Sifan Hassan won the Sydney Marathon. The Dutch athlete, who was born in Ethiopia, dominated the race from start to finish, clocking a new record of 2:18:22.

Paris Olympic champion Sifan Hassan won the Sydney Marathon. The Dutch athlete, who was born in Ethiopia, dominated the race from start to finish, clocking a new record of 2:18:22.

She finished ahead of Kenya's Brigid Kosgei, the former Tokyo Olympic champion, with Ethiopia's Workenesh Edesa Gurmesa in third.

In the men's race, Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros also ran a record-breaking time of 2:06:06, beating his compatriot Addisu Gobena by around 10 seconds. Legendary Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, who was seeking to win a 12th major marathon, could only finish ninth.
