# Romania issues border alert over aerial target near Ukraine

Romanian defense radars tracked an unidentified aerial target near the Ukrainian river border on the morning of August 2, triggering a public emergency warning in border communities.

The National Military Command Center notified emergency services to broadcast a RO-Alert notification to residents in Tulcea County shortly after detecting the object around 9:30 AM.

Military officials confirmed the target vanished from radar systems shortly after detection without crossing into Romanian airspace.

**Heightened airspace security**

The incident follows a sharp escalation in regional airspace violations along NATO’s eastern flank.

Romanian F-16 jets shot down three Russian Shahed-type drones over Romanian territory and territorial waters between July 24 and July 26.

The interceptions occurred in uninhabited areas of Buzău County, near the settlement of Sfântu Gheorghe, and within the Sulina–Chilia sector of the Danube Delta.

**Diplomatic retaliation**

In response to repeated airspace violations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador in Bucharest on July 27.

Bucharest subsequently declared a Russian diplomat persona non grata, giving the official five days to leave the country.

Data from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense indicates that Russian drones have breached Romanian airspace in 33 separate instances since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
