# Chisinau City Hall announces energy and water conservation measures

Chisinau City Hall has announced measures to conserve electricity and water in response to the ongoing energy and hydrological crisis. The municipal authorities will turn off decorative lighting in buildings they manage and will shift the centralized irrigation of green spaces to nighttime. They emphasized that these measures will not compromise the safety of residents or the upkeep of green areas.

Public lighting in the capital is designed to ensure the safety of citizens. We cannot leave streets, parks, and the courtyards of apartment buildings without light, as the safety of residents is our priority, the municipal authorities state.

Centralized irrigation of public spaces will be conducted at night to reduce water consumption. The irrigation schedule will remain unchanged in a few areas where existing systems do not allow for modifications, including on the Alley of Mircea cel Bătrân, Dacia Boulevard, and Cathedral Square.

The City Hall also emphasizes that the maintenance of green spaces and sanitation in the city is supported by alternative water sources. For manual irrigation, water is pumped from the city's lakes, and streets and sidewalks are washed with technical water sourced from the Chișinău Mine, which is not drawn from the Nistru. As for the city's fountains, they were filled early in the week, with water requiring a top-up only once a month.

In light of the government's warnings regarding potential electricity supply interruptions during certain hours, especially at night, municipal authorities urge residents to exercise caution when moving about the streets, in parks, on public transport, or while driving.

"With 1 million people living in Chișinău, their safety is a constant concern for us," states the message from the City Hall.

The flow of the Nistru River has decreased significantly due to drought and low water levels in the Novodnestrovsk reservoir. Authorities anticipate further declines in water levels. To address this issue, an artificial dam is being constructed at the Vadul lui Voda Catchment Station to raise water levels and ensure a reliable drinking water supply for residents.

In response to the hydrological alert, the Chisinau Municipality Emergencies Commission has developed an intervention plan that identifies 213 priority water supply points. This includes 108 kindergartens, 30 medical institutions, and 25 public access points.

Additionally, hospitals and kindergartens in the capital have been equipped with special containers, tanks, and cylinders that can store water reserves for several days in the event of a disruption to the drinking water supply.
