# Rescuers warn extreme heat poses fatal risks to children

Moldova’s General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) has issued an urgent public warning, highlighting severe life-safety risks for young children left in vehicles during peak summer heat.

With ambient temperatures forecasted to reach 38°C across most of the country on August 5–6, rescuers warn that vehicle interior temperatures can surge past 50°C in minutes. When a child's body temperature hits 40°C, heat stroke can set in rapidly with potentially fatal consequences.

**Daily precautionary measures**

Emergency officials urge parents to keep children indoors during peak heat hours between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

If outdoors, children should wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and stay continuously hydrated. Seniors are similarly advised to avoid traveling during high-temperature hours and to maintain adequate fluid intake.

**Water safety and hydrocution**

The IGSU also highlighted critical risks associated with summer swimming, urging the public to use only designated beaches staffed by certified lifeguards.

Emergency responders warn against entering cold water abruptly after sunbathing. Rapid temperature changes can trigger cold-water shock, potentially causing severe vascular distress or sudden cardiac arrest.

Substance use before swimming remains strictly prohibited, and parents must maintain uninterrupted visual supervision of children near any body of water.

**Heightened wildfire hazard**

Compounding the heatwave, persistent low precipitation has driven wildfire risks to extreme levels across the region.

A nationwide yellow alert for severe vegetation fires remains in effect through August 7. Officials urge citizens to avoid open flames near forests or agricultural fields, dispose of cigarettes safely, and refrain from burning yard waste during extreme heat.
