The implementation of Moldova's new public sector wage law has been postponed indefinitely. Consequently, the salary increases for public employees previously scheduled for September 1 have been put on hold.President Maia Sandu announced the decision on August 6 during a broadcast on Jurnal TV.

**Fiscal policy alignment causes delay**

According to President Sandu, the delay stems from the need to align public spending with the new fiscal policy presented on August 6 by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.

Both the tax reform and the wage law are interconnected, requiring the executive to re-evaluate available state revenues before moving forward.

President Sandu noted that an implementation by September 1 was unrealistic given the timeline. She explained that the government must estimate incoming revenues from the tax reform and compare them directly against the projected costs of the wage increases.

**Government promises implementation following parliamentary review**

The president assured public sector employees that the promised pay raises will take effect as soon as possible.

She expressed optimism that necessary adjustments will be finalized in the coming weeks, allowing Parliament to review the updated wage bill once it returns from recess.

The initial wage increases had been pledged by the former Munteanu administration when it introduced its first iteration of the fiscal and wage reforms. That proposal faced substantial criticism from trade unions and economic experts.

Following the resignation of the previous cabinet and the inauguration of the new government, officials reassessed the fiscal framework.

**Key measures in the revised fiscal proposal**

The updated fiscal package presented by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan on August 6 introduces several structural adjustments.

It increases the personal tax exemption by €525 (approx. 10,300 MDL), raising the threshold from €1,515 to €2,040.

The initiative aims to incentivize formal tax compliance, curb undeclared employment, and bring 100,000 workers into the formal labor market by 2029.
