The leaders of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are meeting in Jeddah on Friday, Aug. 7, to formalize a landmark regional defense agreement.

The pact comes amid escalating military volatility across the region, driven primarily by mounting tensions between the United States and Iran.

**Fast-tracked negotiations**

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is scheduled to hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Prime Minister Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir arrived in the kingdom on Thursday for an official visit lasting through Saturday, while President Erdoğan is expected to arrive on Friday.

**Broader geopolitical significance**

*"While the meeting occurs against the backdrop of heightened Gulf tensions, its significance extends far beyond the immediate crisis and short-term considerations,"* said Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi.

Islamabad has actively sought to mediate diplomatic solutions to halt the US-Iran conflict, while Ankara has played a prominent role in negotiations surrounding the war in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan previously announced a bilateral defense accord in 2025—a partnership that drew significant international attention given Pakistan's position as the sole nuclear-armed nation in the Muslim world.
