Moldova has temporarily recalled its ambassador to Russia, Lilian Darii, for urgent consultations in Chisinau following a severe security incident near the Ukrainian border.

The decision was officially announced on Monday, August 10, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

**Border security breach**

The diplomatic move follows an August 9 incident in Crocmaz, Ștefan Vodă district, where an aerial munition crashed and exploded. The blast damaged several nearby homes, though no casualties were reported.

Moldovan authorities condemned the incident as a grave violation of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the direct threat posed to civilian safety.

Chisinau reaffirmed its unwavering stance on the regional conflict, directly attributing the security risks to Moscow's military actions.

*"Moldova condemns the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine and its consequences for our security and the entire region,"* the Foreign Ministry stated. *"In this context, the Foreign Ministry is recalling the ambassador to Moscow for consultations."*

**Forensic investigation**

Law enforcement officers have concluded their initial site examination in Crocmaz. While early reports suggested the debris belonged to a combat drone, detailed technical inspection shifted the primary hypothesis toward a guided missile component or missile-drone hybrid.

Investigators determined that the aerial device struck a tree within a forest belt before detonating approximately 2.5 meters above the ground.

The high-altitude explosion scattered fragments over a wide area, causing structural damage to multiple residential properties. Police confirmed that this marks the first time an aerial device of this specific configuration has been identified on Moldovan territory.

A comprehensive investigation remains ongoing to confirm the exact origin and technical specifications of the device.

Following the event, President Maia Sandu stated that Moldova will urgently prioritize strengthening its airspace surveillance and defense capabilities, warning that the war is encroaching ever closer to *"our citizens' homes."*
