# Moldova exempts diaspora citizens from inheritance tax

Moldovan citizens living abroad will remain exempt from inheritance tax under the proposed 2027 fiscal policy, the Ministry of Finance announced.

The official clarification follows rising concerns among the Moldovan diaspora that planned tax revisions would penalize citizens residing overseas for more than 183 days.

**Legal exemption remains intact**

Under Article 20, letter (i) of the current Tax Code, inheritances received by Moldovan citizens are non-taxable. Officials confirmed that the draft fiscal policy for 2027 proposes no changes to this provision.

Physical presence outside the country does not alter a citizen's tax-exempt status regarding inherited property within Moldova, the ministry stated.

**Misleading interpretations dismissed**

Finance Ministry officials explained that proposed amendments to Article 71 target non-citizens who lack tax residency in Moldova, rather than diaspora members.

Finance Minister Victoria Belous dismissed rumors of a new tax on overseas Moldovans, describing such claims as baseless and inaccurate interpretations of the legislative draft.
