# Suspected missile strike ignites fire at Samara defense hub

Emergency alerts sounded across Russia’s Samara Region overnight on August 15 following a reported missile threat. Shortly after, eyewitnesses shared photos and videos showing explosions and thick plumes of smoke rising over an industrial zone.

An open-source intelligence (OSINT) analyst from the independent news outlet Astra evaluated footage published by the monitoring channel Exile Nova+. The analysis identified an explosion and a subsequent large fire at a major manufacturing facility.

**Strategic defense facilities impacted**

The burning workshop is situated on grounds shared by two key Russian state enterprises: the Progress Rocket Space Centre and the Aviakor aviation plant. Because the production facilities of both companies sit adjacent to one another, precise damage attribution remains under assessment.

The Progress Rocket Space Centre is a core subsidiary of Russia’s state space corporation, Roscosmos. Since 1994, the facility has developed and tested Soyuz-2 launch vehicles as well as various military and civilian satellites.

**Critical aviation infrastructure**

Aviakor Aviation Plant is one of Russia’s largest aircraft manufacturing and repair enterprises. The facility specializes in constructing, overhauling, and maintaining civil and military aircraft, alongside producing major structural components.
