The benchmark MOEX Index fell 4.29% to close at 2,136.3 points, erasing 250 billion rubles—approximately €2.5B (approx. 49B MDL)—in market capitalization during the main trading session, as reported by [The Moscow Times](https://ru.themoscowtimes.com/2026/08/14/poletel-kamnem-vniz-rossiiskii-rinok-ruhnul-rekordno-smobilizatsii-posle-zayavlenii-lavrova-a203557).

Between Wednesday and Friday, the index dropped 8.4%, wiping out in three days half of the gains accumulated over the previous month and a half.

**Geopolitical rhetoric sparks market panic**

Market analysts attribute the sudden collapse directly to hardline statements from Russian officials. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov explicitly rejected freezing the conflict along the current frontline and threatened harsher responses against Western nations supporting Kyiv. Moscow also declined a proposed Black Sea truce.

Following a modest opening, equities plummeted during midday trading. Major blue-chip stocks suffered heavy losses by the end of the evening session, including Sberbank (-1.4%), Magnit (-3.2%), Gazprom (-4.4%), Lukoil (-4.8%), Rosneft (-5.1%), and Rusal (-6.5%).

**Deteriorating expectations among investors**

The selloff ends a brief summer recovery following a historic 17-week losing streak between late spring and early summer. Investors are once again closing long positions as expectations of diplomatic progress between Russia and the United States falter.

Anticipation surrounding a reported diplomatic mission by U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv and Moscow has faded, as the visit failed to materialize weeks after being announced.

**Fiscal pressure and interest rate risks**

Analysts warn that persistent geopolitical tensions and ongoing attacks on infrastructure threaten to widen Russia's federal budget deficit.

With key interest rates remaining elevated and broader economic growth stalling, market strategists at Veles Capital and Alor Broker warn that the MOEX Index could fall further toward its annual low of 1,898 points.
