# "Stolen billion" recovery slow, only 36 million lei in ten months

> Over a decade after the banking fraud, the recovery of the "stolen billion" is progressing slowly. As of June 30, the total amount recovered from Banca de Economii, Banca Socială, and Unibank reached 3 billion 99 million lei. This figure is 36.84 million lei higher than the amount reported in September 2025.

Over a decade after the banking fraud, the recovery of the "stolen billion" is progressing slowly. As of June 30, the total amount recovered from Banca de Economii, Banca Socială, and Unibank reached 3 billion 99 million lei. This figure is 36.84 million lei higher than the amount reported in September 2025.

According to the Ministry of Finance, most of the recovered funds come from enforcement orders and insolvency proceedings. As of June 30, 2026, nearly 1 billion 772 million lei had been recovered in this manner, which is an increase of 19.08 million lei compared to September 2025, when the total was 1 billion 752.7 million lei.

In terms of loan collections, recoveries reached 660.43 million lei, a slight increase from 660.41 million lei ten months ago, representing just 20,000 lei.

Additionally, the state has recovered 456.54 million lei from the sale of assets belonging to the three banks, an increase of 13.14 million lei since September 30, 2025.

For assets taken into possession, recoveries rose from 205.63 million lei to 210.22 million lei, reflecting an increase of 4.59 million lei.

**Emergency loan repayment**

The amount repaid by the three banks from the state-granted emergency loan has increased. As of June 30, 2026, total repayments reached nearly 2 billion 954 million lei, which includes interest paid in accordance with the contractual terms. The repayment amount as of September 30, 2025, was 2,929.78 million lei.

In the ten months analyzed, the repayment of the emergency loan increased by 24 million lei, or approximately 0.8%.

Overall, recoveries from banking fraud rose by about 1.2% between September 2025 and June 2026, increasing from 3 billion 62 million lei to 3 billion 99 million lei. The largest increases were seen in recoveries from the sale of assets and other sources.

The recovery process is managed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the National Anti-Corruption Center, and the National Bank of Moldova, which serves as the liquidator for the three banks involved in the largest banking fraud case in the Republic of Moldova.
