Preparations for the upcoming academic year are in full swing across Moldova as parents flood seasonal school fairs in the capital. Vendors across all sectors of Chisinau are offering a wide array of goods, ranging from basic stationery and backpacks to clothing and footwear.

However, expenses vary sharply depending on household size. Families with multiple children report that total outlays can reach up to €1,020 (approx. 20,000 MDL), creating significant financial pressure on low- and middle-income parents.

**Staggered purchases to ease financial pressure**

Many parents are opting to spread their shopping over several weeks rather than buying everything at once. One mother of three noted that she had already spent nearly €510 (approx. 10,000 MDL) solely on clothing, without yet purchasing basic school supplies.

A standard school uniform or outfit costs around €51 (approx. 1,000 MDL). Local vendors explain that prices vary based on the number of items and materials selected, allowing families to adapt their purchases to their available budget.

**Weekend surge at municipal school fairs**

Merchants report steady customer traffic during weekdays, with a notable spike in visitors on weekends. The highest demand remains for core items such as notebooks, pens, and basic supplies for students ranging from primary school to university level.

Organized by municipal authorities, these back-to-school fairs will remain open across all districts of Chisinau until September 6.
