# Moldova offers €204 bonus as teachers weigh strike

> Moldovan educators have rejected the government's proposed monthly compensation of €51 (approx. 1,000 MDL), warning that inadequate financial relief could trigger a nationwide general strike. The measure was introduced to offset delays in implementing a comprehensive public sector wage reform.

Union leaders and teachers argue that the temporary payments fail to offset soaring living costs or resolve systemic staff shortages. While authorities framed the package as an interim solution, educators demand structural salary increases from the start of the academic year.

**Government proposes phased temporary relief**

Under the executive plan, eligible public sector workers will receive a one-off compensation of up to €204 (approx. 4,000 MDL), disbursed in monthly tranches of €51 through the end of the year. Support staff and technical personnel will receive €102 (approx. 2,000 MDL).

Government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici explained on Radio Moldova that fiscal constraints prevent an immediate wage overhaul. He noted that the payments act as a transitional measure until the unitary pay legislation takes effect.

**Unions demand living wages to halt staff exodus**

Trade union representatives contend that the stipend does not make the profession viable for young talent. Ana Cimpoieșu, head of the Hîncești Education and Science Union Center, stated that base salaries must reach at least €1,020 (approx. 20,000 MDL) to prevent severe brain drain.

Low compensation has hit auxiliary staff hardest, with kitchen and maintenance workers earning between €204 and €255 (approx. 4,000–5,000 MDL) per month. Andrei Pavaloi, deputy head of the Chișinău Education Directorate, warned that the capital faces an immediate deficit of 400 teachers.

**Educators prepare for collective action**

Dissatisfaction remains widespread across schools. Tatiana Celeev, a history teacher in Strășeni, emphasized that educators are prepared to pursue drastic measures, noting that monthly aid of €51 fails to cover basic household expenditures.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan previously announced that budget sector staff earning under €1,020 gross per month will qualify for the interim payments starting in October. The national public wage fund is scheduled to expand from €1.68 billion to over €1.94 billion once the delayed legislation takes effect in January 2027.
