# Moldovan energy regulator raises gas rates to €1.01 per cubic meter

Moldova's energy regulator ANRE approved a 41% increase in household natural gas tariffs effective Tuesday, Sept. 1, driven by rising European procurement costs and winter restocking demands.

**Rising procurement and winter stockpiles**

Consumers will pay €1.01 (20.30 MDL) per cubic meter starting this month, an increase of €0.29 (5.88 MDL) over previous rates. Households will receive their first utility bills reflecting the adjusted price in October.

The adjustment follows an urgent petition from state-owned energy trader Energocom, which originally requested an increase to €1.04 (20.93 MDL) per cubic meter. The regulatory agency cited heightened volatility on European spot exchanges, intensifying global competition for liquefied natural gas (LNG), and the necessity of building strategic reserves for the 2026–2027 winter.

Energocom reported that average wholesale gas purchase costs climbed from €423.28 per thousand cubic meters between January and July 2026 to an estimated €623.54 for the August–December period. The differential generated an estimated tariff deficit of €5.3 million (approx. 106.8 million MDL) during the first seven months of the year, as operational service costs outpaced regulated revenue.

**Targeted state compensation**

To cushion the impact of rising utility costs on vulnerable households, the government will maintain its targeted heating compensation program funded through the national budget.

*“Financial support will be prioritized for citizens facing severe economic vulnerability,”* Finance Minister Victoria Belous said, confirming that state resources remain earmarked to protect low-income families during the upcoming heating season.
