# Chișinău school for Ukrainian pupils reopens after $100,000 upgrade

Out of 494 enrolled pupils, 444 are Ukrainian refugees. External donors funded the works to secure quality educational conditions and expand learning opportunities for displaced children.

**Major Japanese grant for sports facilities**

The largest share of the investment, totalling $91,000, funded a full renovation of the school’s gymnasium. The project was financed by the Embassy of Japan through the “Kusanone” Human Security Grant Program, with logistical support from the National Congress of Ukrainians in Moldova.

Contractors fully refurbished the walls, lighting, heating systems, and doors, alongside two dedicated changing rooms. The facility was also equipped with modern sports gear to ensure optimal physical education conditions.

*“These investments not only improve school infrastructure, but also provide a safe, inclusive environment tailored to children’s needs,”* said Ludmila Pavlov, Deputy Secretary General at the Ministry of Education and Research. *“For refugee children from Ukraine, having the opportunity to continue their education in a safe environment, including in their mother tongue, is vital for their integration and wellbeing.”*

**Norwegian and Czech support**

An additional $10,000 allocation from UNICEF, backed by the Norwegian Government, funded the renovation and digital fitting of a classroom in the summer of 2026. The upgrade included two interactive whiteboards, two laptops, and new ergonomic furniture for both pupils and teaching staff.

Alongside the infrastructural improvements, a non-formal education initiative was launched at the start of the school year by People in Need (PIN) Moldova, with support from the National Congress of Ukrainians in Moldova and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The program seeks to guarantee safe, equitable access to non-formal learning for Ukrainian pupils across Moldova.

The “Taras Shevchenko” Gymnasium is one of ten educational institutions selected for the initiative. In the coming months, the school will host socio-emotional learning sessions, Romanian language courses, academic remedial classes, career guidance, and STEAM and robotics workshops.
