# Five Moldovan village museums go virtual in cross-border project

**Cross-border preservation meets digital access**

The initiative is an extension of the Romanian cultural project “Muzee de la sat” (Village Museums), founded in 2021 to address the limited digital presence of rural collections. Participating institutions have been documented through photography, high-resolution videography, and spatial 3D scanning, creating an open-access interactive cultural repository.

The Moldovan phase launched in the southern village of Slobozia Mare, located in Cahul district, where the municipal museum joined the virtual network. Local authorities emphasize the economic and educational potential of digital outreach.

*“Moldova holds remarkable cultural wealth where communities preserve living traditions,”* said Valentina Carastan, mayor of Slobozia Mare. *“Museums link our past, present, and future, motivating us to develop infrastructure and welcome visitors.”*

**Unlocking local archives and village histories**

The project also features the Museum of History and Ethnography in Avdarma, in the southern autonomous region of Gagauzia. Established in 2011 by three brothers, the museum houses nearly 1,200 artifacts donated by residents, alongside rare parish documentation.

*“Fortunately, the parish archive of St. Michael’s Church from 1819 to 1939 survived, enabling us to reconstruct family destinies that many communities have lost,”* said curator Ivana Tanasovici. *“Preserving and sharing this heritage lies at the core of our cultural mission.”*

**Expanding regional coverage across Moldova**

The platform also includes the History and Ethnography museums in Mereni (Anenii Noi district) and Sofia (Drochia district), as well as the Archaeological Museum in Butuceni, located within the Orheiul Vechi cultural-natural reserve.

National tourism officials noted that selection prioritized institutional readiness and geographic diversity across northern, central, and southern districts.

*“We sought balanced regional representation, selecting institutions that were fully evaluated and structurally prepared for digital deployment,”* said Ana Șandra, acting director of the National Tourism Office.

Organizers confirmed plans to scale the initiative across the country in subsequent development phases.

*“Moldova possesses an extraordinary cultural wealth that deserves global visibility,”* said project founder Cosmin Murărașu. *“We plan to expand the initiative to seven additional Moldovan museums.”*
