# Ukraine eyes October trilateral peace talks with US and Russia

Ukraine is preparing to resume trilateral peace talks with Russia and the United States in October, presidential chief of staff Kyrylo Budanov said on the sidelines of a Kyiv conference on Saturday.

*“We are preparing. For October,”* Budanov said when asked about the prospective diplomatic track. He confirmed the trilateral format while declining to comment on potential host locations.

**Diplomatic momentum following US envoy talks**

The announcement comes days after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held high-level discussions in Moscow and Kyiv. Their mission marked their first visit to the Russian capital since February and their inaugural official trip to Kyiv.

Trilateral diplomatic efforts had stalled following a round in Geneva in February as Washington redirected immediate foreign policy focus toward tensions involving Iran. Following their visits to both capitals, Witkoff indicated that all parties welcomed fresh momentum toward structured negotiations.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the American envoys presented *“very good and valuable ideas,”* suggesting that potential future rounds could be hosted by Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, or other neutral partners.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow does not rule out resuming peace talks, though he cautioned that it remains premature to establish precise dates or venues.

Substantive territorial disputes remain central to the deadlock. A primary contention concerns Ukrainian-controlled territories in the eastern Donbas region, which Moscow claims but has failed to capture despite years of sustained fighting.

**European security architecture and long-term commitments**

Addressing the Kyiv conference, Budanov said Ukraine intends to offer reciprocal protection to countries that supported it throughout the war, noting that final arrangements will depend on Europe's collective defense architecture.

*“Let us put it this way: will Ukraine help other nations if necessary?”* Budanov said at the conclusion of a panel discussion. *“Ukraine will certainly remain grateful to all who assisted it, so having Ukraine as an ally is fundamentally advantageous.”*

Budanov emphasized that European partners must explicitly outline Ukraine's mission within the continental defense framework, reaffirming Kyiv's readiness to participate actively in shaping that posture.

Budanov, who previously served as head of Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence before his appointment to the Office of the President, warned against strategic hesitation among European capitals.

*“People say Europe must wake up and prepare. But have you ever considered there might simply be no time left for that? Reality will not knock at the door; it will kick it down with a boot,”* he said.
