# Five freight cars derail on Soviet-era southern Moldova line

Five freight cars carrying gravel derailed in southern Moldova on Sunday, halting traffic along a Soviet-era railway corridor that has not undergone major overhaul since 1956, state railway authorities said.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 PM on the Cahul–Prut 2 railway section, at kilometer 25 near the southwestern border with Romania. Train no. 3082 was hauling 29 open-top freight cars loaded with crushed stone when five of them came off the tracks. No injuries were reported, according to state-owned operator Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM).

**Aging infrastructure and emergency recovery**

Specialised emergency and technical intervention teams were deployed to the site to hoist the derailed carriages back onto the track and repair structural damage to the railway bed. 

*“Currently, specialised intervention crews from CFM are carrying out operations to lift the derailed wagons and restore the railway line,”* the operator said in an official statement.

Railway officials highlighted the severe wear affecting the regional line, pointing out that the section has remained without comprehensive capital rehabilitation for nearly seven decades. 

*“It should be noted that this segment of the railway infrastructure has not benefited from rehabilitation or modernisation works since 1956,”* CFM stated.

**Capital overhaul underway**

Despite decades of neglect, the state enterprise noted that major renewal works have recently commenced on the affected corridor as part of a national modernization effort backed by public funds.

*“Capital repair works have now begun under an approved plan, funded through resources allocated by the Government of the Republic of Moldova to restore railway infrastructure,”* the company added.

Technical experts are conducting an official inquiry to establish the precise causes and operational circumstances behind the derailment.
