Moldova will receive a non-reimbursable grant worth over €4.3 million (approx. 83.2 million MDL) from the United Nations to upgrade operational and emergency response capabilities across its National Army.

The funding is provided by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The project aims to enhance military readiness for crisis management and disaster relief operations.

State Secretary at the Ministry of Defense Sergiu Plop highlighted during Wednesday's Cabinet meeting that the grant represents a vital opportunity to advance army modernization efforts. The project requires no additional allocations from the state budget.

*“The funds provided through UNITAR will be utilized in strict accordance with the national regulatory framework, adhering to principles of transparency, efficiency, reporting, and financial oversight,”* said Plop.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan underscored that the non-reimbursable investment focuses heavily on civilian protection and rescue gear.

*“These are fire engines. They are modular facilities that can be deployed in various crisis situations where the army can intervene, such as natural disasters. It is a solid achievement by the defense team,”* said the prime minister.

Beyond defense readiness, the equipment will expand the armed forces' ability to assist the civilian population during domestic crises. Parliament must now ratify the agreement before the project is implemented by the end of this year.
