# Nobel Foundation announces an increase in prize money to 1.1 million euros

> The value of the Nobel Prize will be 12 million Swedish kronor in 2026, equivalent to approximately 1.1 million euros, for each category. The decision to increase it by one million kronor compared to previous years was announced by the Nobel Foundation and coincides with the 125th anniversary of the awards.

The value of the Nobel Prize will be 12 million Swedish kronor in 2026, equivalent to approximately 1.1 million euros, for each category. The decision to increase it by one million kronor compared to previous years was announced by the Nobel Foundation and coincides with the 125th anniversary of the awards.

The financial adjustment is intended to ensure the long-term sustainability and prestige of the awards presented.

The decision to increase the amount awarded to laureates was motivated by the marking of a jubilee moment in the history of the distinctions.

„*This year we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Prize and, on this occasion, we are pleased that we can increase the value of the prize by one million Swedish kronor. By increasing the amount awarded, we maintain the long-term significance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that its financial component retains its value over time*”, said Hanna Stjärne, executive director of the Nobel Foundation.

The financial amount awarded to laureates has fluctuated substantially since the first edition in 1901, when a prize was worth 150.782 Swedish kronor. Over the past 15 years, the value has been adjusted in several stages. 

In 2012, the funds were temporarily reduced from 10 million to eight million Swedish kronor to consolidate the foundation's budget and were subsequently increased three times to the amount of 12 million.

The 2026 Nobel Prize laureates will be announced between October 5-12. The official award ceremonies will take place on December 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel's death is commemorated.

We recall that, on February 1, 2026, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Arild Hermstad, a member of the Norwegian Parliament and leader of the Green Party. 

The Norwegian politician justified his decision by stating that Maia Sandu is „*on the front line of defending democracy in Europe*”, in a context marked by repeated attempts at external influence and destabilization.

„*Maia Sandu responded through peaceful means: strengthening the rule of law, protecting free elections and maintaining a democratic direction*”, the Norwegian MP noted.

In conclusion, Arild Hermstad considers that defending democracy is an essential form of peacebuilding today and that the role played by Maia Sandu in protecting the Republic of Moldova’s democratic path justifies her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.
