# National Wine Day: Over 60 million lei economic impact in two days

> In the 25 years since its first edition, National Wine Day has transformed from a simple celebration into an event with a significant economic impact for the Republic of Moldova. The economic effects generated during the two days of the event far exceed the organizational costs, which this year amount to approximately 4 million lei, said Ștefan Iamandi, director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, on Moldova 1 TV.

Merchants and the HoReCa sector generate revenues of approximately 20 million lei during this period, including from hotel and accommodation services, Iamandi
said. Another more than 40 million lei comes from sales made by winemakers and the food sector. Added to these are the expenses of tourists who come to the Republic of Moldova during the event.

One of the new elements of this year's edition is the attempt to establish a new Guinness record. The organizers want to create the largest human representation of a grapevine in Great National Assembly Square. At least 400 volunteers are needed to create it, while the number of participants could reach up to one thousand, says the director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, Ștefan Iamandi. The record is also expected to become an instrument for the international promotion of the Republic of Moldova and the wine industry, especially since the last record in the wine sector was 20 years ago.

In addition to the promotional component, National Wine Day also has a significant economic impact. Ștefan Iamandi says that organizing the event involves expenses of approximately four million lei.

At the same time, Iamandi maintains that the economic effect of the two days of celebration is much greater than the organizational costs. In addition to the earnings from wine sales, these are joined by the expenses of tourists who come to the Republic of Moldova during the event. Ștefan Iamandi estimates that a tourist spends, on average, approximately 600 euros.

*„Over the course of these two days, according to the data presented by the minister, retail sales increase by approximately 2%. Compared with the total annual volume, 2% is quite significant. Wine sales, including at wineries, increase 2-3 times. The figure is impressive. Accommodation and hotel occupancy are approximately 30% higher than on ordinary days. So accommodations are full on National Wine Day. And, obviously, transport services, public transport, taxis, revenues increase by at least 50% during these two days. So, it is not only the wine sector that benefits but also the entire economy of the Republic of Moldova from an event that takes place over two days”*.

Ștefan Iamandi also pointed out that another important instrument used is the Taster's Passport. It allows visitors to discover wines and the history of winemakers, while at the same time providing the National Office of Vine and Wine with data about consumer behavior and preferences. Last year, 9 thousand passports were purchased, a record figure for the event. This year, the National Office of Vine and Wine has set out to exceed this figure. Approximately 18 thousand glasses were purchased for tastings, and the passport mechanism was expanded. For winemakers, this data represents a direct source of information about consumer preferences.

*„The Taster's Passport is an exceptional solution, implemented over the last two years, for analyzing consumer data. Within the Taster's Passport, last year, each taster had 10 tastings. This year, a tasting costs 300 lei, they receive 10 tastings, plus two more tastings, if they come with their impressions about the wine tasted, on this application, they receive two more and receive a tritan glass as a gift. Each tasting is recorded, and often our visitors analyzed what they had tasted, took notes, including in this application, what they liked, did not like, wrote, and gave stars from one to five stars, including impressions about how this wine was tasted," explained the director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, Ștefan Iamandi.

Launched in 2002 under the name Wine Festival and later renamed National Wine Day, the event takes place every year, on the first weekend of October, immediately after the grape harvest. According to the organizers, 114 wineries will participate in this year's edition, of which 49 are small wineries, an increase compared with the 99 wineries present in 2024 and 106 in 2025.
