Rail freight transport costs are rising. Moldova’s Railway (CFM) has announced a 15% increase in tariffs for export, import, transit, and domestic traffic, effective November 1, 2026, driven by rising costs for petroleum products.

The decision was announced on Friday, October 9, following a joint meeting with business representatives where tariff adjustments and the organization of rail freight transport were discussed.

CFM officials said transporting Moldovan grain would remain a priority to support agricultural producers and facilitate exports.

"CFM ensures equal treatment for all business entities, without favouring or selectively prioritising specific partners," they stated during the meeting.

CFM has pledged to continue cooperating with the Customs Service to ensure compliance with transit timeframes across the Republic of Moldova.

In August of this year, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine reached an agreement on transporting Ukrainian goods via the Moldovan railway network, specifically along the section that crosses our country's territory.

Under the agreement, Chișinău is offering a 50% discount on rail transit for Ukrainian goods—a measure that could generate revenues of several million euros for CFM.

This move sparked concerns in the Republic of Moldova, including fears that the volumes of Ukrainian grain transported through the country could cause congestion at border crossings and ports, thereby disadvantaging Moldovan producers.

Authorities have assured that transporting Moldovan grain remains the priority.

Ukraine plans to export and transport up to six million tons of goods via various regional routes during the 2026 agricultural year. The Republic of Moldova aims to capture approximately 10% of this volume.
