Canadian officials confirmed casualties following a massive fire Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, as emergency crews worked through strong winds to contain the advancing flames, CNN reported.

Local authorities said the blaze spread rapidly beyond the perimeter of the military facility into surrounding areas. No evacuation orders were immediately issued for residents living near the installation.

Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed that the incident resulted in deaths and injuries, without providing a specific casualty toll or identifying the cause of the fire. He described the situation as active and sensitive.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that a serious incident occurred, noting that an investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

Emergency crews deployed to the area to provide medical triage and patient transport. The STARS air ambulance service dispatched two medical helicopters from Edmonton and Saskatoon to support local responders.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers deployed substantial operational resources after receiving a request for assistance. Early reports indicated that the fire originated within a training area on the base.

General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, said the armed forces are collaborating with federal, provincial, and local authorities to manage the response. The primary focus remains the safety of military personnel, their families, and the surrounding community, she noted.

CFB Wainwright is located roughly 210 kilometres southeast of Edmonton and ranks among the primary training facilities for the Canadian Army. The base houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.

The town of Wainwright, home to approximately 6,600 residents, sits directly north of the military installation.
