Moldovans abroad sent home $1.35 billion (approx. 23.75 billion MDL) during the first eight months of 2026, according to official data released by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM).

In August alone, recorded transfers reached $165.91 million (approx. 2.92 billion MDL). The monthly volume marked a decrease of nearly $19.5 million compared to July, when transfers peaked at $185.39 million, following $181.30 million recorded in June.

**Seasonal fluctuations and informal inflows**

Official records show that Moldovan citizens have received an average of $1.6 billion annually from abroad over the past five years. The highest volume on record occurred in 2022, when annual remittances climbed to nearly $1.75 billion through formal channels.

Economists note that actual transfers are substantially higher. Unofficial estimates suggest total inflows could exceed $2 billion annually when accounting for unrecorded cash brought home directly or delivered through informal cross-border networks.

**Broad central bank accounting metrics**

The central bank emphasized that recent statistical gains cannot be interpreted directly as a 25.3% increase in the disposable income of migrant workers.

The published data encompasses a broader range of cross-border transactions beyond classic family remittances. The figures also include salaries paid to local residents by foreign representative offices, state social benefits, pensions, child maintenance payments, and funds received by foreign nationals temporarily staying in Moldova.
