US President Donald Trump paused fresh sanctions against Russia to safeguard ongoing diplomatic negotiations, claiming that an elusive peace deal in Ukraine is *“closer than ever.”*

**Diplomatic maneuvers and Washington hesitation**

Speaking on recent engagements, Trump noted that discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine had entered a sensitive phase. The American leader stated that piling further economic pressure on Moscow at this juncture could derail tentative progress toward an agreement.

*“We may be close to a deal for the first time in a long time,”* said Trump. *“And when you are close to a deal and holding very delicate negotiations, you don't bring in new sanctions.”*

Trump maintained that the United States could introduce fresh restrictions at any moment, though he did not outline specific triggers. Reports suggest Washington is seeking a formal peace signing between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the upcoming G20 summit in Florida, raising concerns over coercive pressure on Kyiv.

**Territorial concessions and regional skepticism**

Diplomatic channels have simultaneously expanded across Europe. US special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow following discussions with Putin, presenting preliminary ceasefire documents, while trilateral consultations between Ukraine, the United States, and European partners took place in Norway to outline parallel peace initiatives.

However, the freeze on punitive measures drew sharp criticism from Kyiv. Trump blocked a bipartisan sanctions bill last week, prompting President Zelenskyy to warn that Washington's posture risks forcing Ukraine into outright capitulation.

The core dispute remains centered on territory. Ukrainian political analyst Marin Gherman emphasized that Moscow has offered no credible security guarantees that territorial concessions would bring permanent peace rather than tactical pauses before renewed aggression.

*“We are witnessing an open alignment of positions between the American and Russian sides, and that position is very simple: for Ukraine to cede territory to unblock the peace process,”* said Gherman in an interview with Radio Moldova. *“Yet we have no guarantees from the Russian Federation that territorial concessions mean peace, nor that it will stop.”*
