**Utrecht offers space for 12,500 bicycles**

Utrecht Central Station is home to a bicycle parking facility with 12,500 spaces, making it the largest of its kind in the world. The facility allows commuters to park their bicycles close to the railway platforms before continuing their journeys by train.

“Half of all train journeys in the country start with people cycling to the station. Rather than carrying all these bicycles on trains, the system allows people to park them as close as possible to the platform in a free, secure, covered and monitored facility. They can then take the train to their final destination and most likely hire a bicycle there, using the same card,” said Chris Bruntlett, a representative of the Dutch Cycling Embassy.

**Connecting trains, buses and bicycles**

Driebergen-Zeist station is another example of how different modes of transport can be connected to make transfers easier for passengers.

Nejc Geržinič, a Slovenian mobility expert based in the Netherlands, said the station is also used to test new approaches to multimodal transport.

“Even at a smaller local station, significant results can be achieved when different modes of transport are well connected. At the same time, this station serves as a pilot project for Dutch Railways, where new solutions are being tested to make connections between trains and other forms of transport easier,” he said.

**A country built around cycling**

The Netherlands is widely recognised for its cycling infrastructure and the role bicycles play in everyday transport.

The Dutch government estimates that the country has more than 35,000 kilometres of dedicated bicycle paths and a fleet of 22.8 million bicycles shared by a population of more than 17 million. Bicycles account for more than a quarter of all transport journeys in the country.

The Dutch approach demonstrates how secure bicycle parking, convenient railway connections and public-transport bicycle hire can help make cycling a practical part of daily travel.
