Starting today, November 1, drivers in the Republic of Moldova must drive with their headlights on, even during the day. This rule applies to all public roads—both within and outside of built-up areas—and will remain in effect until March 31, 2027.

Under the Road Traffic Regulations, drivers must use low-beam headlights—commonly called "short-range" lights—or dedicated daytime running lights (DRL), if the vehicle is equipped with them.

This measure is implemented annually during the cold season, when days are shorter and conditions such as fog, rain, or snow can reduce visibility on the roads. The objective is to make vehicles more easily visible to other road users and to lower the risk of traffic accidents.

Drivers who operate their vehicles without the required lights face fines ranging from 300 to 450 lei, under Article 230, paragraph (4¹), of the Contravention Code. Authorities may also issue a formal warning for this violation; however, no penalty points are applied.

Motorists are urged to check that their vehicle's lighting system is functioning correctly before setting off, to adjust their speed to weather conditions, and to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

Point 34 of the Road Traffic Regulations requires drivers to keep their lights on during the day, and this applies annually from November 1 to March 31.
