After several delays over the past two years, the Vulcănești–Chișinău power line is set to be commissioned next week. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu announced that the line will undergo testing in the coming days before becoming fully operational.

On November 2, the Minister said the commission responsible for accepting construction and installation works met last week to set the testing and connection schedule for this strategic line. The same commission is set to convene again early this week to confirm the completion of construction and authorize the energization of the line.

"It will undergo testing over periods of 24, 48, and 72 hours, after which the entire project will be energized. The contractor aims to make every effort to energize the line by the end of the week for comprehensive testing, followed by load testing. Provided everything goes as planned and there are no unexpected issues, the line should be operational by next week," said Dorin Junghietu during the program "La 360 de grade" on Radio Moldova.

However, the commissioning of the Vulcănești–Chișinău power line will lead to adjustments in utility bills.

"This is an investment in a project. A portion of the costs has already been factored into the transmission tariff over the past year, following a 24-bani per megawatt increase. Once the project is fully commissioned, Moldelectrica will request that the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) incorporate the full investment—or the remaining portion—into the transmission tariff. This adjustment will not result in a significant tariff hike, just as was the case last year," Junghietu explained.

We remind you that the commissioning of the Vulcănești–Chișinău power line has been postponed five times, with the most recent deadline—August 27—also being missed.

The power line could not be put into operation because of delays in repairing a critical transformer sent to Spain.

The Vulcănești–Chișinău power line, also known as the "Energy Independence Line" spans 157 kilometers and will enable the transmission of electricity from Romania to Chișinău, bypassing the energy hub at MGRES in the Transnistrian region.

The total cost of the project is approximately 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros are allocated specifically to constructing the line.

Construction of the line was completed in November 2025; however, bringing the entire system online also required the modernization of the electrical substations at both ends.
