Hungary is exploring alternative gas routes as the EU prepares to ban Russian gas imports by autumn 2027, Foreign Minister Anita Orbán told Telex in an interview published Tuesday.

**Diversifying gas supply routes**

Budapest is examining several options to reduce its reliance on Russian energy and secure alternative supplies.

These include the North-South Corridor, which could give Hungary access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Greece and Azerbaijani natural gas.

Another option is to increase the capacity of Croatia's LNG terminal and the pipeline connecting it to Hungary. Orbán said this could improve the country's access to alternative supply routes.

Hungary could also benefit from LNG terminals in Poland and Lithuania. However, this would require resolving infrastructure bottlenecks across the region.

**EU ban sets 2027 deadline**

The European Union has established a phased ban on Russian natural gas imports. Long-term LNG contracts will be covered by the prohibition from January 1, 2027, while the ban on pipeline gas imports is scheduled to take effect from September 30, 2027, with a possible extension to November 1 under specific conditions.

The measures aim to eliminate the EU's dependence on Russian gas and prevent Moscow from using energy supplies as a tool of political pressure.

Hungary remains heavily dependent on Russian energy. In 2025, Russian sources accounted for 74% of the country's imported natural gas and more than 90% of its imported oil, according to the European Commission.

**A shift in Hungary's foreign policy**

Under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Hungary pursued an Eastern Opening policy that strengthened economic and energy ties with Russia despite tensions between Moscow and the European Union.

The political landscape changed in May 2026, when Péter Magyar took office after his Tisza party defeated Viktor Orbán's Fidesz in the parliamentary elections.

The new government has reaffirmed Hungary's European orientation and begun reassessing its relationship with Moscow. Diversifying energy supplies is now a key challenge as the country prepares for the EU's 2027 deadline.
