The Chișinău Municipal Council on Thursday, November 5, rejected a proposal to grant all pensioners free public transport in the capital. Opponents argued that the measure could only be introduced if the Government agreed to cover the costs.

Irina Baran of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) proposed the draft decision.

"We see it stated in the Chisinau City Hall’s publications that pensioners are entitled to free transport, though it is not specified whether this applies only to those residing in the municipality or to pensioners from across the country. Therefore, I am putting forward this draft decision to amend the annex, ensuring that all pensioners from the Republic of Moldova are entitled to free transport within the territory of the Chisinau municipality," stated Irina Baran during the meeting on November 5.

Representatives of the Party of Socialists faction argued that extending free travel to all pensioners nationwide would place additional strain on the Electric Transport Authority (Regia Transport Electric).

"We would only agree to this if the Government assumes responsibility for covering the costs," the Socialist councilors noted.

Chiril Moțpan, a councilor representing the Dignity and Truth Platform, emphasized that this is a high-impact initiative of national significance and called for the Government’s involvement.

"In my view, this is a necessary initiative for the country, and I believe it is also an obligation of the Government", he said.

When put to a vote, the PAS proposal failed to secure the necessary number of votes.

As of May 1, a single trip by bus or trolleybus in Chisinau costs 7 lei. Elderly individuals who live in the municipality travel for free when they present their pensioner identification card.
