The volume of waste could be reduced by up to 90% through a harmless incineration procedure: What the government approved regulation provides for

Using a harmless incineration procedure, the volume of waste going to landfill could be reduced by up to 90%. A regulation aimed at gradually reducing the amount of land subject to contamination by landfill and laying down special conditions for incineration plants has been approved by the government.

The document will have a positive impact on the environment and will also help alleviate the energy crisis, as waste can also be used as an alternative fuel, said Environment Minister Rodica Iordanov.

"Waste incineration involves the use of plants at temperatures that are regulated, with very strict monitoring and control of emission systems into the atmosphere, air and water. Until now, open burning of such waste has been practised. These activities must be countered and with this Government decision we will reduce the areas of waste that are created in the Republic of Moldova. All waste that can no longer be recycled will be incinerated where appropriate," said the Environment Minister.

In this context, the environmental authorities urge citizens to refrain from organising bonfires made of tyres on Easter night and warn that the smoke emitted from them is dangerous for the environment and people's health. Those organising tyre bonfires risk fines of 1,200 to 1,800 lei for individuals and 10,500 to 15,000 lei for legal entities.
