Constanta: Intervention of the Naval Forces to neutralise a sea mine

The Coast Guard was notified on Thursday by a fisherman in the Black Sea that he had hooked an object in his trawl that appeared to be a sea mine, and specialists will move to the area to check it out. The Romanian Naval Forces announced that the mine sweeper left the military port to intervene to neutralise the sea mine-like object. At the same time, the Romanian Naval Forces confirmed that the object found by the fisherman in the Black Sea is a mine, saying it is part of the historical mine barrage, news.ro reports.

"According to the specific procedures, after receiving the request, the Chief of Naval Forces Staff ordered the intervention with the 'Vice Admiral Constantin Bălescu' mine sweeper (PM-274) and a group of EOD divers on board. The ship left the military port of Constanta at around 2 p.m. and the crew was ready to intervene to neutralize the reported object," reads the statement from the Naval Staff.

According to the source, this is the sixth intervention of the Romanian Naval Forces to neutralize a sea mine.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, 68 sea mines have been confirmed and destroyed in the Black Sea, including one by Georgia, four by Bulgaria, five by Romania, seven by Turkey and 51 by Ukraine.
