Parliament is in session. MPs to examine the Audiovisual Council's activity report for 2022

The agenda for Friday's plenary session includes seven items, including the Audiovisual Council's activity report for 2022

According to the report, during 2022, the Audiovisual Council imposed 447 sanctions on media service providers and distributors for non-compliance with legislation regulating audiovisual activity. These include 235 fines totalling 2,340,000 lei and 212 public warnings. The data is contained in the institution's activity report, which was presented to the Committee on Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sport and the Media today.

Ninety-five sanctions were imposed for violations of Article 13 of the Moldovan Audiovisual Media Services Code, which deals with ensuring correct information. At the same time, during 2022, the members of the Audiovisual Council paid particular attention to the way in which stories about the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine and the security crisis in the region are reported. The members of the Board found that some TV stations did not provide accurate information, violating the principles of good faith, impartiality, balance of opinions and separation of facts from opinions. As a result, 55 sanctions totalling 213,000 lei were imposed.

The Broadcasting Council also initiated, ex officio, checks on the fairness of the coverage of the refugee issue or the decision to ban symbols illustrating and justifying military aggression. Monitoring of the linguistic content of news and debate programmes was also initiated ex officio.

In 2023, the Audiovisual Council will continue to focus on compliance with provisions relating to local audiovisual programmes, protection of the national audiovisual space, ensuring correct information, respect for the legal regime of ownership, and coverage of the local elections in 2023.
