European Commission rejects bans on Ukrainian grain imports imposed by Poland and Hungary

The European Commission (EC) has rejected as unacceptable the bans imposed by Poland and Hungary on the import of grain and agricultural products from Ukraine, BBC reports.

The European Commission said trade policy is "within the exclusive competence of the European Union" and unilateral decisions cannot be tolerated.

But the European Commission did not specify what decisions it would take. Poland and Hungary said the bans were necessary to protect the Polish and Hungarian agricultural sector from cheap imports.

The government in Warsaw has banned imports of grain and other food products from Ukraine to protect Poland's agricultural sector, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the ruling PiS party, announced on Saturday, Reuters reports.
