The Greek socialist MEP Eva Kaili, one of the vice-presidents of the European Parliament, was arrested on Friday evening in Brussels as part of an investigation into suspicions of corruption, the international press reports

The case would target Qatar's attempts to demonstrate that it has made progress on human rights and the working conditions of migrants after harsh criticism over the hundreds of deaths of workers who worked to erect stadiums hosting the soccer World Cup, according to Le Soir.

Four other arrests have already taken place in the Belgian capital on Friday morning in the same case.

Eva Kaili, 44, was "arrested for questioning" by police, the federal prosecutor's office confirmed. She is one of the 14 vice-presidents of the European Parliament. Under current law, the only way to arrest an MP protected by immunity is to catch him red-handed.

The Daily Mail writes that the politician's partner, Luca Visentini, 53, who is the current head of the International Trade Union Confederation, is said to be involved.
