European Parliament to vote on a resolution assessing the challenges facing Moldova

The European Parliament is to vote today on a resolution assessing the challenges facing the Republic of Moldova, according to a press release from the institution. The resolution is the result of a plenary debate on the same subject held in March.

The decision was taken after President Maia Sandu warned earlier this year that Russia wants to stage a coup d'état in Moldova, including through sabotage and increased civil unrest, in order to halt the country's EU integration process.

The statement said that the Republic of Moldova, as one of the poorest countries in Europe, has suffered from political and economic upheavals due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including street protests organised with the aim of destabilising the country's political situation.

The Republic of Moldova was granted the status of a candidate country for EU membership, along with Ukraine, in June 2022.
