Romania introduces additional control measures for cereals from Ukraine
Romania will continue to allow the transit of grain from Ukraine, but is introducing additional control measures, to be implemented from today, to protect farmers, Rador reports.
Thus, customs controls are being set up for all agri-food products coming from Ukraine, and lorries with cereals would be sealed and strictly monitored while in transit through the country. The measures were taken after yesterday's talks between Romanian and Ukrainian agriculture ministers.
Hungary will also continue to allow the transit of grain from Ukraine, but will ensure that these deliveries leave "in a controlled manner", the Hungarian agriculture minister said on Wednesday evening at the end of talks in Brussels. The minister said discussions were under way on other products to which the current import ban could be extended, in addition to wheat, maize, rapeseed and sunflower. At the same time, the European Commission announced a new financial aid of €100 million for farmers in Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, affected by the facilities offered to producers in Ukraine. It is not yet known what percentage will go to Romania, but the money should be divided between the five countries by the end of the week.
The prime ministers of Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the president of Bulgaria sent a joint letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, asking her for a series of measures to protect internal markets.
