US and EU Ambassadors in Chisinau: We reaffirm our commitment to our fight against anti-Semitism and the spread of hatred and lies
On the 120th anniversary of the anti-Jewish pogrom that marked the history of Chisinau, several officials paid tribute to the victims. EU Ambassador Mazeiks and US Ambassador Logsdon made a joint speech reaffirming their commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism and the spread of hatred and lies.
EU Ambassador to Moldova Janis Mazeiks said in a video message that such atrocities will not be repeated and it is our duty to fight anti-Semitism.
"We have a moral responsibility to commemorate this terrible past by keeping the victims of the pogrom in our memory. We must make it clear that such atrocities will not be repeated. Today, we reaffirm our commitment and determination to fight anti-Semitism and stand up to those who spread falsehoods, hatred and lies," said Janis Mazeiks.
For his part, the US Ambassador to Chisinau, Kent Logsdon, said that people started this pogrom instigated by fake news and general anti-Semitism. The diplomat stressed that the police at the time did not intervene to stop the killings.
"Fake news, distributed by some local media at the time, reported that two children had been killed by the Jewish community. Spurred on by this and general anti-Semitism, ordinary people became murderers. The local police overlooked the murders and did not intervene. In keeping with the spirit of tolerance in modern Moldova, it is crucial that there is public acknowledgement of the events of those dark days in April, which happened in plain sight over a century ago," said Kent Logsdon.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean met recently with the President of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, Alexander Bilinkis. The officials also referred to the implementation of the Action Plan on the promotion of Holocaust remembrance and the culture of tolerance to combat racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance, approved for the period 2021-2024.
