A Russian attack plane "accidentally hit" the centre of the Russian city of Belgorod

A Russian attack plane accidentally hit the centre of the Russian city of Belgorod, near Ukraine, late Thursday night, causing an explosion and damaging buildings, the Defence Ministry said, Hotnews.ro reports.

Local authorities reported a powerful explosion in the city, which lies just across the border from Ukraine. The regional governor said two women were injured, according to Reuters.

He did not specify what kind of weapon was used.

"While an air force Suhoi Su-34 aircraft was flying over Belgorod, there was an accidental discharge of aviation ammunition," Tass quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.

The Su-34 is a supersonic fighter-bomber aircraft. The ministry said some buildings were damaged and announced that an investigation is already underway, according to Tass.
