Experts // European Parliament resolution argues support for Moldova in both the European integration process and in overcoming crises

The European Parliament's resolution on the challenges facing the Republic of Moldova argues in favour of our country both in the process of European integration and in overcoming the crises caused by the invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, according to the experts who discussed this issue on Radio Moldova's "Public Space" programme.

The European Parliament resolution on the challenges facing the Republic of Moldova sends an optimistic message to our country. The European legislative forum's proposal to start accession negotiations as soon as the conditions set by the European Commission are met argues the support that the European Union offers to our country, says expert Ion Tăbârță.

"This resolution of the European Parliament makes us optimistic, but at the same time we are realistic that some things still need to be done. The vast majority of them concern, of course, the area of justice reform and the fight against corruption, or we are still not certain that we have achieved a reformed justice system in the Republic of Moldova and that the phenomenon of corruption has already diminished", said the expert.

Miruna Troncota, director of the Centre for European Studies in Bucharest, believes that the Republic of Moldova could start accession negotiations, as it has met many of the conditions set by the European Union.

"I think the progress is sufficient at this point for the European Union to give a political message and move to the next stage. The next stage means the start of negotiations and the opening of chapters, which will also take time. So I think that this is a signal that the European Parliament is not only giving, that is not only symbolic, because the European Parliament can only put pressure and make a political statement to the Commission and the Council. But here we also have the support of Romania and Poland, which I am sure has been supported for a long time", said Miruna Troncota.

MEP Dacian Ciolos told our radio station that the European Parliament has asked the Commission and the European Council, the Member States of the European Union to speed up their decisions on the Republic of Moldova.

"On behalf of the European Parliament, we urge the Member States and the Council of the European Union to speed up certain decisions that the Republic of Moldova needs in terms of securing the promised funding, as well as that mission within the framework of the common European security and defence policy, with civilian experts to be installed as soon as possible in Chisinau, to help the government and authorities of the Republic of Moldova, not only in the reforms it is preparing, but also in all measures concerning the security of the Republic of Moldova", said the MEP.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu handed over in Brussels to the Director General of the European Union's Directorate General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Gert-Jan Koopman, the Republic of Moldova's contributions to the European Union's 2023 enlargement report. It is a first assessment of our country's fulfilment of the conditions set by the European Commission.

A decision on the launch of accession negotiations will be taken in October.
