Zelensky enacted a law banning geographical names related to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has promulgated a law banning geographical targets in Ukraine from bearing names associated with Russia and public figures of that country. The law is aimed at "decolonising toponymy and making the use of geographical names in Ukrainian settlements more efficient", Rador reports.

The new provision prohibits the naming of Ukrainian geographic sites with names that symbolise and glorify Russia or its memorable places, dates, events and figures who carried out aggression against Ukraine (or another country), as well as totalitarian policies and practices of persecution as a result of criticism of the Soviet totalitarian regime and Russian regimes.

The law would ensure that the Russian Federation's influence on Ukraine's internal politics is diminished, create preconditions for preventing Russian propaganda and accelerate the de-Sovietisation of the country.
