CUB calls on the Government to take concrete steps to demilitarise the left bank of the Dniester River
The political party Coalition for Unity and Welfare (CUB) calls on the Government to take concrete actions to demilitarise the left bank of the Dniester. On the other hand, representatives of the Reintegration Policy Office told Radio Moldova that the demilitarisation of the Transnistrian region, including the evacuation of foreign military troops, requires a broader discussion not only with the authorities in Tiraspol, but also with the Russian Federation.
The Coalition for Unity and Welfare calls on the authorities in Chisinau to take measures for the complete demilitarisation of the Transnistrian region and the unconditional withdrawal by the Russian Federation of munitions and military forces illegally deployed on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, reads a press release issued by the political party.
According to the source, a starting point in this process could be the denunciation of the Agreement of 21 July 1992 on the principles of peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in the Transnistrian region.
At the same time, the party calls on the government to replace the current peacekeeping mission with a civilian one, under an international mandate, as well as to sanction and restrict the activity of private companies, which supply the paramilitary and military structures of the separatist regime.
The issues of demilitarisation of the Transnistrian region require a broader discussion, Mariana Sarî, spokeswoman of the Reintegration Policy Office, told Radio Moldova.
"Regarding the demilitarisation of the Transnistrian region, including the evacuation of foreign military troops, we would like to mention that these issues are not the subject of discussions in the negotiation formats with Tiraspol, but require approaches on bilateral dialogue platforms between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation and multilateral ones, through technical and diplomatic channels," Mariana Sarî said.
A Russian military contingent is stationed in the eastern region of the Republic of Moldova, controlled by a separatist regime supported by Moscow, and officially guards the Cobasna warehouse, left over from the Soviet period.
The Russian Federation made an international commitment in 1999 to evacuate troops and ammunition from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, but it has not fulfilled this commitment. Chisinau has repeatedly called for the withdrawal of foreign troops and ammunition and has also opted to change the status of the peacekeeping mission set up after the 1992 war.
