Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Chernobyl atomic power station accident, when two explosions sent massive amounts of radioactive material into the air. The United Nations later called it "the worst environmental disaster in human history."
3,350 Moldovans took part in the clean-up of the Chernobyl disaster, and over 1,200 people died over the years. According to data presented by the Chernobyl Union of the Republic of Moldova, 1,174 children were born into the families of the participants.
Every year in Chisinau and other parts of the country, activities are organised to commemorate the victims of the Chernobyl disaster and other nuclear accidents, which are marked annually on 26 April.
