Zelensky had a "long and meaningful" phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski announced Wednesday that he had a "long and meaningful" phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and said he hoped it would give a boost to relations with Beijing. The call was also confirmed by Beijing, Reuters and The Guardian report.
"I had a long and meaningful phone call with President Xi Jinping," Zelenski wrote on Twitter. "I believe that this call, as well as the appointment of Ukraine's ambassador to China, will give a strong impetus to the development of our bilateral relations," the Ukrainian leader said.
China will send special representatives to Ukraine and hold talks with all sides to resolve the crisis in the country, President Xi Jinping told his Ukrainian counterpart on Wednesday, Chinese state media reported.
China will focus on promoting peace talks and strive for a ceasefire as soon as possible, Xi told Zelenski, according to Chinese state media.
Xi said in early April that he was willing to talk to Zelenski when he felt the time was right.
Zelenski has repeatedly asked Xi to meet with him, including after the Chinese leader visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month.
