CNSM: The minimum wage should be 5,800 lei. How much do Moldovans want to earn
The National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova (CNSM) is aiming for the minimum wage to be 50 percent of the average wage in the economy, CNSM President Igor Zubcu told Radio Moldova. People say that a minimum wage of around 5,800 lei would be too low and that it should be 11-15 thousand lei.
Ensuring a decent living for citizens and creating well-paid jobs are part of the objectives of the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova, CNSM President Igor Zubcu said today at an event dedicated to the International Day of Solidarity of Working People.
"We would like to draw your attention to some of the CNSM's objectives for the future: promoting the establishment of a minimum wage of 50% of the average wage in the economy. We believe that the minimum wage should ensure a minimum pension. Promote the improvement of the legislation in the field of salaries in the budgetary and real sectors in order to increase the motivation of wage earners and keep them in the national economy", explained Igor Zubcu.
Citizens say that, due to inflation, a minimum wage of around 50 percent of the average wage, i.e. around 5,800 lei, would be too low to ensure a decent standard of living. According to them, the minimum wage should be around 11-15 thousand lei and the average wage in the economy - 20 thousand lei - to cope with the rising prices.
"It also depends on where you live. If you live in the city it's one situation, if you live in the village it's another. If the desires are smaller, then the money has to be smaller too." "At the moment, I think that at 20 thousand (ed. salary) would be perfect, taking into account today's prices." "The more the better". "At least 15-16 thousand. The salary is never enough. The higher the better, at 20 thousand I think it would be just about right. Five thousand lei is survival, for bread and water".
According to the National Social Insurance House, the average monthly salary in the economy, forecast for 2023, is 1,700 lei, compared to last year's figure of 9,900 lei. Currently, the minimum wage in the economy is 4,000 lei, and the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova proposes that it be raised to 5,800, which is half the current average wage in the economy.
