PHOTO Historic moment for Britain: King Charles III crowned
King Charles III received St Edward's Crown on Saturday at Westminster Abbey in a coronation ceremony, with those present saying "God Save The King", which in translation would mean "God save the King".
The King received St Edward's Crown, which is used only for this ritual. Made for King Charles II in 1661, it weighs almost two kilograms. Covered with a globe and cross, symbolising the Christian world, it is made of solid gold and encrusted with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnets, topaz and tourmaline.
The King took the oath with his hand on the Bible and specifically promised to uphold "the Protestant Reformed religion established by law" and "inviolably preserve the ordinance of the Church of England".
He also pledged in the oath to "govern the people of the United Kingdom, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the other kingdoms and territories to which they belong".
Queen consort Camilla was also crowned in a simpler ceremony - although she was not asked to take the oath. She is crowned with the Queen Mary Crown.
