Republic of Moldova celebrates Victory Day and the commemoration of the heroes who died for the Independence of the Homeland and Europe Day
The Republic of Moldova celebrates today, 9 May, the Day of Victory and the commemoration of the fallen heroes for the Independence of the Homeland and the Day of Europe, according to the decision on commemorative days, holidays and days of rest in the Republic of Moldova.
On the morning of 9 May, President Maia Sandu, Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean laid flowers at the "Mother of Sorrows" monument and the Eternal Fire at the "Eternity" memorial complex to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War and the heroes who died for the country's independence.
Also today, the "ȘOR" Party and the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) announced that they will organize the "Immortal Regiment" action. The "ȘOR" party will take to the streets "with portraits of relatives who took part in the Second World War", while the PSRM event will take place "without party flags, with all the symbols of the Great Victory", according to statements by the two parties. They did not say whether they would organise the actions announced for 9 May together.
Although the "Saint George" ribbon is banned in Moldova, both Socialist and Shor Party representatives said they would wear it on Victory Day.
At the same time, several events will be held in the capital dedicated to Europe Day, which this year is celebrated in European countries under the sign of peace and unity. In Chisinau, a series of events will be organised under the banner "EU-Moldova: Stronger together". On this occasion, the Government invites citizens to visit the Botanical Garden in the capital, where several activities will take place, including for children.
